Their population peaked around the 1950s or so, after which it
dwindled for... certain reasons. Although they have some capacity for
ferociousness, they are merely not designed to co-exist with other
animals. Like dodo birds, they've lived on small islands — away from
continental landmasses.
Even after dissections, we haven't a conclusive answer — not even
close — as to how their thought process works, or if they are
conscious (in the way we understand) to begin with. Furthermore, this
great mystery has thoroughly altered our scientific theories on the
existence and emergence of consciousness*. It is quite possible that
thought, or the act of thinking (cogito ergo sum), does not require
the intricacies of a brain.
There is perhaps only one left. It must be quite lonely for them. With
whom may they fall in love with?
Furthermore:
1. Cat-like apples do not have distinct genders. Instead, they may
simply (for the fun of it) choose to behave according to gender norms
— particularly in human societies. However, noteworthy is that their
original societies did not have gender identities or roles, or even
any hierarchies, in the usual sense.
2. Reproduction happens post mortem: when a catus dies, a tree may
sprout from the ovules. This has formed the basis for their funeral
practices and cultural beliefs: funerals are not held, nor is death
feared (amor fati?). Instead, others merely make sure the seeds are
able to sprout. It is believed that the new tree is a continuation of
the dead community member. Hence, it is merely the form that changes,
but the member lives on. And so, the cycle of eternal rebirth
continues — until the end of time (or the extinction of the species).
3. As implied earlier, their societies were anarchistic. However, we
have no exact knowledge of their average societal structure, as their
societies were disrupted greatly during initial contact.
